PSPP vs SPSS
PSPP (gnu.org/software/pspp) is GNU's free, open source replacement for SPSS Statistics. It deliberately mimics the SPSS dialog and syntax so SPSS users can switch with minimal retraining. This page covers what PSPP shares with SPSS, what it does not yet implement, and where a browser tool fits.
PSPP and SPSS compared with StatVeda
- PSPP is GPL-licensed and free (gnu.org/software/pspp); SPSS Statistics is paid and proprietary (ibm.com/products/spss-statistics).
- PSPP reads SAV (SPSS data) and POR (portable) files and supports a large subset of SPSS syntax. The dialogs mirror SPSS for Frequencies, Crosstabs, Compare Means, ANOVA, Regression, Reliability, Factor and the standard nonparametric battery.
- PSPP's documented gaps relative to SPSS include: no Advanced Statistics module (mixed models, GLM with random effects, GEE), no AMOS for SEM, no Bayesian module, more limited plotting. The PSPP project page enumerates the supported procedures.
- Where StatVeda fits: PSPP is the right call when your data is in SAV files or your group already uses SPSS syntax. StatVeda is the right call when you want to skip the install and your dataset is small enough to paste or upload as CSV.
