Free Alternative to Excel + Real Statistics
Excel's built-in Data Analysis ToolPak handles the basics: descriptive statistics, t-tests, F-test, single-factor and two-factor ANOVA, simple correlation and regression. The Real Statistics Resource Pack by Charles Zaiontz extends Excel into territory the ToolPak does not cover: nonparametric tests, multiple-comparison post-hoc, factorial ANOVA with interactions, repeated measures, logistic regression and a long list of supplementary functions. The combination is genuinely capable, free, and lives inside a spreadsheet most researchers already use.
What you give up is portability and audit. Real Statistics is an Excel add-in (.xlam) that has to be installed per machine and per Excel version, and the formulas are tied to specific cell ranges in the workbook. StatVeda gives you the same families of tests as a browser tool: paste the data, pick the test, get a styled result panel with Word and PPT export. No add-in, no version mismatch, no broken cell references when the data layout changes.

Migration path
- For a one-off analysis, copy the data range from your Excel sheet (Ctrl-C), open the relevant StatVeda tool, paste into the input box.

- Verify on a known result before switching. The three-group, six-replicate one-way CRD worked example in Snedecor and Cochran (1989, ch. 12) is the cleanest cross-check.

In Excel: Real Statistics Two Factor ANOVA returns the source-of-variation table (Rows / Columns / Interaction / Within), F and p for each effect, the cell-mean table, and (with the post-hoc add-on) the Tukey letter display, all written to a new sheet beside the data.
In StatVeda
In StatVeda: paste the data into the Two-Factor Factorial (RBD) calculator. The result panel shows the same source table with df, SS, MS, F and p for A, B, A x B and Error, the cell-mean table for A x B with its critical difference, the marginal means for A and B, and a Tukey letter display for any significant effect, with one-click Word export.
Note: F and p for the main effects and the interaction will agree to four or more significant figures because both engines run the same factorial ANOVA formula. Real Statistics gives you a new sheet; StatVeda gives you a Word file.
Honest footnote: what this comparison cannot tell you
- •Excel + Real Statistics is genuinely a complete statistics environment for most thesis-level work. If you are already fluent and your data lives in workbooks, there is no urgent reason to switch.
- •Real Statistics's coverage on niche distributional and mathematical-statistics utilities is broader than StatVeda's; if you fit copulas or run SVDs by hand, stay with Real Statistics.
- •StatVeda does not connect live to a spreadsheet. Every change to the data needs a fresh paste.
