JASP vs jamovi
JASP (jasp-stats.org) and jamovi (jamovi.org) are both free, open source desktop statistics packages built on top of R. They have overlapping feature sets and different design philosophies. This page compares them honestly without declaring a winner, and notes where StatVeda fits in.
JASP and jamovi compared with StatVeda
- Both JASP and jamovi are free and open source. JASP is released under the AGPLv3 (jasp-stats.org features page) and jamovi is released under AGPLv3 (jamovi.org).
- JASP's signature strength is its Bayesian module: Bayes factors are surfaced alongside frequentist results for many tests (t-test, ANOVA, regression, contingency tables). For researchers who want both inferential paradigms in one panel, JASP is the natural choice.
- jamovi's signature strength is its modular plugin architecture (jmv, jamovi-arm and others). Niche analyses are added as community modules without forking the core. The data editor also feels closer to a spreadsheet, which lowers the entry cost for SPSS migrants.
- Both cover the standard descriptive, t-test, ANOVA, post-hoc, correlation, regression, reliability and basic factor-analysis families. Neither covers the full classical agricultural-design family (split-plot, split-split-plot, alpha and balanced lattice, augmented CRD and RBD, diallel, generation means, line-by-tester) natively.
- Where StatVeda fits: a browser path for the classical designs JASP and jamovi do not cover, with the same descriptive and post-hoc bundle and a Word, PPT and citation export. JASP and jamovi remain the right call for Bayesian work and for SPSS-style spreadsheet editing.
