Browser Alternative to GenStat
GenStat is the long-standing commercial statistics package from VSN International, originally developed at Rothamsted Research. It has decades of authority in agricultural statistics and is the reference tool for many UK and Commonwealth field-trial workflows: REML mixed models, balanced and unbalanced ANOVA, the full lattice and alpha-lattice family, biometrical genetics, biplots and meta-analysis. The GenStat Discovery edition has historically been free for academic use in qualifying countries.
GenStat's downsides are price (commercial licences), Windows-only delivery and a learning curve that assumes you can write GenStat command syntax for non-trivial models. StatVeda gives you the same family of classical designs (CRD, RBD, factorial, split-plot, split-split-plot, strip-plot, Latin square, balanced lattice, alpha lattice, augmented CRD and RBD, AMMI, GGE, diallel, generation means, line by tester, path) as a free browser tool with no install and no command syntax.

Where GenStat wins
- ✓REML for unbalanced mixed-effects designs. This is the GenStat reason most agricultural biometricians keep a Windows machine on their desk.
- ✓Decades of authority. GenStat's ANOVA output is what UK and Commonwealth agricultural reviewers expect to see.
- ✓The DESIGN module generates randomisations and field layouts for the full classical-design family with documented randomisation algorithms.
- ✓Procedure library and command language. Repeat the same analysis across years with a saved script.

- ✓Free and browser-based. No Windows licence, no install on the lab machine.

- ✓Word and PPT export with the F table, post-hoc letters and CV percent already laid out for the thesis chapter.
- ✓Goes beyond GenStat's free Discovery scope on the breeding-genetics side: full Griffing diallel methods 1 to 4, partial diallel, line by tester, three- / five- / six-parameter generation means with the Cavalli joint scaling test.
- ✓Cross-platform. Same StatVeda runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and tablet.
Migration path
- Keep GenStat for the REML mixed-effects work. StatVeda does not match it on arbitrary unbalanced random-effects designs.
- For the classical-design analyses you run repeatedly, paste the same treatment-by-replication grid into the relevant StatVeda calculator and confirm F, MS and p match against your last GenStat output.
- Both engines use the same closed-form formulae for balanced classical designs, so the headline numbers will agree to four or more significant figures.
- Use StatVeda for the everyday thesis-chapter run; keep GenStat scripts for the year-on-year archival workflow.
Worked example: Same alpha-lattice analysis in GenStat and StatVeda

In GenStat
In GenStat: ALPHA design followed by AOV gives the source-of-variation table (Rep, Block within Rep, Treatment, Error), F and p for the treatment effect, adjusted treatment means and the LSD or HSD post-hoc with the GenStat letter display.
In StatVeda
In StatVeda: paste the genotype x block x rep grid into the Alpha Lattice (PBIB) calculator. The result panel shows the same source-of-variation table, the adjusted treatment means with their CD at 5 percent, the post-hoc letter display, residual diagnostics and a Word export.
Note: Adjusted treatment means and the F figure agree to four or more significant figures because both engines use the same incomplete-block adjustment. The GenStat output is in the GenStat report viewer; StatVeda exports a Word file.
Honest footnote: what this comparison cannot tell you
- •If your supervisor or examiner expects GenStat output verbatim, that is a real reason to keep using it.
- •StatVeda does not yet match GenStat on REML for arbitrary unbalanced mixed-effects models. For that, GenStat or R lme4 are the cleaner answers.
- •GenStat's documentation and the Rothamsted training material are excellent. StatVeda's tutorials are at /learn but are not as deep.
